"Song of the Vikings" Giveaway

When I started this blog, I promised to explain why I named it "God of Wednesday." If you've followed me over the past year, you can probably guess. Now comes the quiz: Who is the god of Wednesday and what does he have to do with this blog?

Answer me by email (nancymariebrown@gmail.com) or Facebook or in the comment section below, and I'll print the best answers in a future blog.

When I get enough responses, I'll put the names in a hat, and the winner will receive a free, autographed copy of "Song of the Vikings"--or, if you already have it, one of my other books (as available).

Remember, a valid entry has to answer both parts of the question: who? and what?

To make it a fair test, here are some blog posts from 2012 that might help you out:

April 4: "The Lord of the Ring of the the Nibelungs"

May 30: "The Homer of the North"

June 6: "The Most Influential Writer of the Middle Ages"

November 14: "Seven Norse Myths We Wouldn't Have Without Snorri: Part I"

November 21: "Seven Norse Myths We Wouldn't Have Without Snorri: Part II"

December 5: "Seven Norse Myths We Wouldn't Have Without Snorri: Part III"

December 12: "The Tolkien Connection"

Remember, all answers to the quiz are entered into the giveaway. Good luck, and be creative--maybe you can explain me to myself.

Join me again next Wednesday for another adventure in Iceland or the medieval world at nancymariebrown.blogspot.com

  1. I think I found the answer....

Without Snorri, we would know next to nothing about the god for whom Wednesday was named (Odin, Wagner’s Wotan)

    Pretty important!!

  2. Odin is the only god worthy of you, my literary goddess, and Wednesday is the only day he gives you enough strength and imagination to write of his exploits. Naming the day after him is mere coincidence.

  3. Yeeey! How exciting!

Snorri made the great epics that made people remember the many names of Odin - Wotan/Woden - Wodensday...

  4. The god of Wednesday is, of course, Odin. The best publicist of the god of Wednesday is, of course, Snorri. And the best publicist of Snorri is Nancy Marie Brown.

  5. Chris.Fry: I can only imagine that your much anticipated book is named after Odin the Allfather/Wotan Woden.. Snorri ensured that the people of the north would inherit a rich tapestry that gives an insight into the minds of our predecessors.treasure worth much more than found gold and silver.

  6. Good answers! Let's see if we can get some more.

  7. The God of Wednesday is Wodan (Odin).

What he has to do with this blog: While perhaps best known as a battle god, Wodan is also a god of inspiration, of poetry, of the bardic arts. It was he who took the mead of poetry at Mimir's well at the cost of his eye. It is he who inspires the writers and musicians and poets.

  8. Yes, Odin has many names. Wednesday is the day of the week in which we honor Odhinn. He is remembered in the Sagas. Snorri was an excellent in the ways of bardic (Skald) sayings to embrace the deeds of the gods. The understanding of how we should act is in the Poetic edda's, and volsungs. (Allfather, Odin, Odhinn, Wotan, grey wanderer, and other spellings based on region. Each versoin of Norse culture like (Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Scandinavian, Icelandic, Rus and Viking0 have different aspects of Odin. Even the Celts, pics and druids have names and versoins based on cross overs of tales once told to honor the days of the week. Friday for Frayja, Thursday for Thor, Tuesday for Tyr, etc. etc

  9. The "God of Wednesday," of course, is Wotan (or Woden or Odin). His significance to your blog is harder to ascertain. But I think it lies in this. Odin was a master of runes and lore, and you are attempting to reconstruct the lore of the Icelanders and Norse.

  10. Odin, who lives on in western consciousness thanks to Snorri, is the God of Wednesday. On Wednesdays, thanks to your efforts, we are all able to channel his wit and bravery. Because of Odin-Snorri-Nancy, we all smirk a little when we hear someone refer to Wednesday merely as "hump day," because we know Woden's Days are so much more awesome than that.

  11. As mentioned above, the "who" for the "god of Wednesday" is Woden (or Odin).
As for the "what", I surmise that you have found a kindred soul in Odin the Wanderer (as you have wandered far to pursue your craft, aided by both Thought and Memory. Also, I believe Odin was able to bestow a mead upon worthy followers/poets. I believe one who writes about medieval science, Norse mythology, and the Viking Age may fall under this heading.

  12. Woden, Odin, Wotan... Woden's Day or Wednesday is a day to anticipate, for there will be a new blogpost from you!

Thanks to Jim Alberty for sending me here back in 2012!

  13. The "God of Wednesday" is Odin.

What does he have to do with this blog? Snorri gave us so much of what we know about the Norse gods. Odin sacrificed a great deal to gain wisdom and knowledge of the runes. I think any historian of Iceland and Norse literature is a kindred spirit to Odin, and willing to make sacrifices to gain knowledge.

Plus, Wednesday is the day you send out new posts!

  14. Darn I thought I had already entered.

This blog is about the God of Woden's Day; Odin the traveler, the "All Father" who created the runes and passed the art of poetry on to mortals! And we wouldn't have this characterization of Odin without Snorri! And we wouldn't have all this wonderful knowledge about Snorri without Nancy Marie! Love your blog!

  15. I am a student of History, and English/British History in particular. As I recall, Woden was the most important God of the Anglo-Saxon peoples of England from the 6th Century onwards until their conversion to Christianity. Wednesday is named for Woden as other days still bear the names of other Anglo-Saxon Gods such as Thurin for Thursday. These God names and the Gods themselves are reflected in Norse or Viking Gods and names Including Odin and Thor.
As to the connection to this blog? Well all I can think of is that you remind me of Wednesday from The Addams Family and she had a doll without a head and the Vikings liked to cut off heads with their axes. So there you have it..QED
